A call to turn up the HEAT
Hello!
You’ve found us. We’re a few local Huntsvillians who are initiating an athletic community called the Huntsville Endurance Athlete Team, or HEAT for short.
The goal of this group is to pull together the many like-minded people that live and train in endurance athletic endeavours here in Huntsville and surrounding area. Why endurance athletes? There are many active people in our community, and there are several small pockets of people participating in different sports, however, virtually none have an organized group that they can make contact with! Adventure racing, cycling (road and mountain), running (road and trail), triathlons, and long distance swimming are just a few of the sports that are “unorganized” that we hope we can connect.
HEAT is trying to bring all these groups together through two means:
[1] Though a virtual community. www.heatitup.ca is a place where people can post their training sessions and invite others to join them. Going for a long bike and want some company…post your workout distance, start location and time, and people might just show up. Starting group rides and runs, time trials (for running, cycling, and swimming), track workouts, strength workouts…there are a number of possibilities, and it is only limited by what kinds of workouts we can dream up. It is also a forum to communicate other athletic centric activities – information about carpooling, equipment education, training principles, nutrition, etc.
[2] In person. Through group meetings a social dynamic can be built in information sessions on a variety of topics. It may also be a chance to take a break from sport and meet with friends who are like minded. We are hoping to draw on the expertise of our members as well as outside speakers invited to speak to our group
One great aspect is that the community is driven by your involvement and engagement. More importantly it is FREE! We want to promote a team that works together. With this in mind it would be great if all participants could provide input from their own areas of expertise. We all have strengths that each of us can gain experience from. In essence, we are hoping to develop a social network where like minded people can get together to do like minded activities and then enjoy each others company afterwards over some food and drink if time may permit!
It is exciting to have the opportunity to build an inclusive community of like minded individuals in the field of endurance sport! There is truly a great depth of athletic experience in Huntsville. HEAT is a medium where familiar names and faces can finally come together in an environment where they can freely share information, facilitate continued exercise and training programs and simultaneously encourage other members of the community at large to participate in sport.
In time, we hope that this builds a strong sense of community where it can help better our community through sports representation and advocacy within our town.
If you are interested, please email us at iwantto@heatitup.ca as we are just collecting names of interested people at this point. We will send out regular updates as we get the whole process going and let you know when our “kick off” event is. You can also subscribe to this blog’s RSS feed to keep up on new postings.
Time to turn on the HEAT!

Hi there Mr WordPress. Glad to see this is up and running.
Rich
Nice work, guys, great to see the community-building. Let me know how we can work together to grow the endurance community in Huntsville.
We also have a regular running group that meets on Sunday mornings in Huntsville. We are currently starting at the gate at Arrowhead and will do so until there is snow cover. We will then run from the Hwy 60 Tim Horton. To find out more, join the Facebook group: Sunday Morning Running Group in Huntsville. (http://www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=152637837163 )
Cool! Thanks for sharing that Louise. Perhaps you’d consider forwarding this on to your group and rescheduling on Sunday to join us at 2pm? We’d love to meet up and introduce ourselves and have you participate in the community. I’m sure there are lots of other runners in town that would like to hook up with you and participate in your weekly runs. Cheers, Rob.
I love the idea of heading to the track only to discover a few people show up to suffer with me because I’ve posted my scheduled workout!
Pierre Mikhail
Thanks for the comment Pierre. Misery loves company, right?
The question is, if you suffer alone in the forest, is it still considered suffering without witnesses?
Rob.

240 Km weekend relay running series – minimum distance of 8 k to max of 12 k per person for 3 of 4 stages of the race. Looks like major fun and possible opportunity to raise money for a local charity such as Muskoka Hospice OR the Simcoe Muskoka Regional Cancer Centre. Teams of 5 – 8 people. Anyone interested.
August 21 & 22, 2010
What a great day for a run. Fanatastic turn out. Thanks to Rich for the sadistic run course. This could be the start of a great club.
Cheers,
Rick Birkhimer
Hey Lia,
Simcoe Shores looks like a fun relay…..if you need a team member I might be interested. I would love to support either Muskoka Hospice OR the Simcoe Muskoka Regional Cancer Centre. I’m a teacher so August long race works for me.
Come on out to the Muskoka Loppet Snowshoe Race on Sunday January 24th. There will be 3km and 9km races, using the Lookout Trail. We have a heated building to use where we can keep warm pre and post race. You won’t be cold during the race! This is a really good course that will give you a great workout. Go at your own pace and have some fun. Snowshoes available for rent from Arrowhead Park. Sign up at http://www.arrowheadnordic.ca
Oh, and your race entry includes a hot lunch!
The snowshoe races now have two key sponsors, Algonquin Outfitters and GV Snowshoes. They are giving us the draw prizes, which are open for every finisher. We now have two pair of the GV Cat Trail snowshoes, their excellent running snowshoe. They will be the top draw prizes.
Check them out at http://www.gvsnowshoes.com
Let’s see you out there. Try a new sport. You will love it.
I am snowshoeing at the Limberlost Forest and Wildlife Reserve on the afternoon of Wednesday 30th. Would anyone like to join me? Most of the trails that we will be on have been packed by other snowshoers. Some of it will be ‘virgin snow’, but probably not very deep. I would like to be out there by 1:00pm.
This will be a hike, not a run. We will ‘shoe’ for a couple of hours at an easy pace.
It is beautiful out there. You will love it.

Hi everyone,
An update on the snowshoe races at the Muskoka Loppet on Jan 24th.
There are now three races. The course is the Lookout Trail (now known as Hardwood Hill Trail), which is a 3km loop. We will have:
3km individual
9km individual
9km relay
The relay is for two or three person teams. The rule is that each team can only use one pair of snowshoes. That should make for a fun race.
For the draw prizes: two pair of GV cat Trail running snowshoes ($180 pr), gaiters, poles, gift certificates, and lots more.
For place prizes : 3km- $25 gift certificates from Running Free (1st place male, 1st place female)
9km individual -$50 gift cert. from Running Free (1st male, 1st female)
9km relay – working on it.
So I encourage you to put together a team or race as an individual. Let me know if you need snowshoes. I have one pair that someone can borrow. Also, AO and Sharpley’s rent them.
If you aren’t able to race, I do need some volunteers. Call me at 789-9716 or email –

I am interested in organizing a couple of endurance swims this summer on Fairy Lake.
*One swim will be from the beach on Golden Pheasant Drive on Fairy Lake to Grandview Resort and back. This swim would be 2.5 K.M. in length.
* The second swim will be more ambitious and it is for experienced long distance open water swimmers. The swim will start at the beach next to Huntsville High School on Brunel Road. The swim will be a tour of the islands of Fairy Lake. We will swim to Antler Isand and then to The Twin Sisters, from there we would swim to One Tree Island.
From one tree island we will swim 200 meters to the local beach on Golden Pheasant Drive for lunch.
After lunch we will swim back to the start at the beach close to Huntsville High School. This swim is only for more experienced swimmers and the length of the swim is between 5.5 to 6 K.M.
* All swimmers will have to have a canoe or a kayak spot them.
This is a fabulous opportunity develop and practice your open water skill.
Please let me know if you are interested.
I am thinking of both swims taking place in July.
